Getting Ready for 4th of July
As we approach the heart of summer, two significant topics come to the forefront: the celebration of Independence Day and the critical importance of safety during this festive season. Concurrently, with the holiday festivities, there is an increased focus on ensuring safe travel and responsible behavior, particularly regarding impaired driving. Additionally, for businesses, especially those in transportation and logistics, the holiday poses unique challenges regarding security and theft prevention. With initiatives like Brake Safety Week on the horizon, it’s essential to foster a culture of safety and vigilance, both on the road and within our facilities. Let’s explore these themes as we honor our nation's heritage and commit to responsible celebrations.

Independence Day Holiday
As we commemorate Independence Day, let's take a moment to reflect on what America stands for. It's also important to recognize the servicemen and women who are diligently safeguarding our freedoms around the world and advocating for those who lack the liberties that our great nation offers. Let us always remember the sacrifices made by those who came before us in defense of the United States and the values we cherish.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
To ensure the safety of families this Independence Day, law enforcement agencies will ramp up efforts to combat impaired driving during the holiday celebrations. The dangers of drinking and driving are well known, yet many still make the reckless choice to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. Let's make this Fourth of July both enjoyable and safe.
If you're attending a Fourth of July gathering, be sure to choose a designated driver beforehand. If you're the host, provide nonalcoholic drink options for those who are not drinking. Also, keep an eye on how much your guests are consuming, especially if someone has been drinking and plans to drive. Check on their transportation plans and consider offering them a place to stay if they don't have a sober driver.
Remember: Driving while buzzed is equivalent to drunk driving. With the availability of ride-share services, there's really no reason to get behind the wheel if you're impaired.
The typical cost of a DUI arrest can reach around $13,500. This figure includes expenses like vehicle impound fees, fines, legal fees, higher car insurance rates, and various other penalties. It's also important to note that prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can all hinder your driving abilities. This impairment is even more significant when these substances are mixed with alcohol or other drugs, leading to a potential DUI charge.
Is Your Terminal Facility Prepared for the Fourth of July Holiday?
It is common for thieves to focus on truck terminals and dealerships during holiday weekends. Thieves are aware that these times often lead to less activity on site. It's important to implement additional security measures to protect your facilities:
- Ensure anti-siphon devices or locking caps are in place—or instruct drivers not to fuel units at the end of the day.
- Confirm all security alarms and cameras are fully operational.
- Walk the perimeter and check that fencing is secure and undamaged.
- Move units, pallets, tires, and other materials away from fences to prevent them from being used to climb over.
- Make sure security lighting is functioning and not obstructed by vehicles or trees.
- Consider blocking entrances and exits to prevent unit theft.
- Assign management personnel to randomly check the terminal over the weekend.
- Notify local law enforcement of your holiday operating hours so they know when activity at your facility is expected.
Prevention and common sense can go a long way in deterring theft and protecting your business.
CVSA Brake Safety Week: August 24–30
This year's Brake Safety Week will take place from August 24 to 30, as announced by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). It's part of Brake Safety Awareness Month in August.
During this enforcement campaign, roadside inspectors will:
- Perform North American Standard Inspections with a focus on brake systems and components
- Pay particular attention to brake drums and rotors
CVSA will release a report later this year that summarizes the findings. This event also serves as a valuable chance for motor carriers to educate both drivers and maintenance personnel on the significance of brake safety.
