Get Ready for the 4th of July Weekend

As we celebrate Independence Day, take time to honor America and reflect on all that our nation represents. Remember the military men and women who defend our freedom around the world and fight for those who do not share the liberties we enjoy. Let us always remember those who sacrificed before us to protect the United States and the values we cherish.
The next Idealease Safety Bulletin will be published on July 10 in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Law enforcement agencies will increase impaired driving enforcement throughout the 4th of July holiday to help keep families safe.
Drinking and driving is a dangerous mix. Despite the clear consequences, some still choose to drive after drinking. Make smart choices to ensure this 4th of July is safe and memorable.
If you are attending 4th of July parties, plan ahead by designating a sober driver. If you are hosting, provide nonalcoholic options for designated drivers and keep an eye on your guests’ consumption. If someone attempts to leave after drinking, check their transportation plans and offer them a place to stay if no sober driver is available.
Driving with "just a buzz" still counts as impaired driving. With the availability of rideshare services, there is no excuse for driving under the influence.
A DUI arrest costs an average of $13,500, including impound fees, fines, legal expenses, higher insurance premiums, and other penalties. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and marijuana can also impair your driving and may result in a DUI—especially when combined with alcohol or other substances.

Is Your Terminal Facility Ready for the 4th of July Holiday?

Holidays often see an increase in theft at truck terminals and dealerships. Thieves take advantage of extended weekends when facilities are left unattended.
Take extra steps to secure trucks and valuables at your facility. If units lack anti-siphon devices or locking fuel caps, instruct drivers not to refuel at day’s end. Confirm that security alarms and cameras are working, and inspect the perimeter fencing for any issues.
Keep trucks and materials like pallets and tires away from fences so they cannot aid in climbing. Check that security lighting is bright and unobstructed; vehicles or overgrown trees can create dark areas where thieves hide.
Block entrances and exits to deter vehicle theft. Assign management to check the terminal at random times during the three-day weekend. Inform local law enforcement of your holiday hours so they know when activity at your facility is expected.
A bit of prevention and common sense can go a long way in discouraging theft and protecting your business.

CVSA Brake Safety Week Set for August 23–29

This year’s Brake Safety Week will take place August 23–29, according to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).
The enforcement campaign is part of Brake Safety Awareness Month, which runs throughout August.
During CVSA’s annual enforcement event, roadside inspectors will:
  • Focus on brake systems and components during North American Standard Inspections.
  • Place special emphasis on brake drums and rotors during this year’s inspections.
The association will release a report on its findings later this year.
The event is also an opportunity for motor carriers to educate drivers and maintenance staff on the importance of brake safety.
