2026 CVSA International Roadcheck – Be Ready!

Every year, the commercial transportation industry comes together for International Roadcheck, a massive safety initiative that puts the spotlight on vehicle and driver compliance. Over the course of three days, thousands of trucks and buses are inspected across North America, highlighting not just regulatory requirements but the shared responsibility we all have in keeping our roads safe.

But safety isn’t just about passing inspections—it’s about fostering a culture of awareness and diligence, from thorough pre-trip checks to understanding the unique risks faced by vulnerable road users like motorcyclists. With May marking Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, now is the perfect time to revisit best practices, compliance tips, and the impact of every motorist’s actions on the road.

In this post, we’ll cover what you need to know about International Roadcheck, essential documentation, safety guidelines, and how every driver—whether behind the wheel of a truck, a car, or a motorcycle—can make a difference.

In this issue:

  • Q&A.

CVSA's International Roadcheck Is Next Week!

International Roadcheck is a yearly three-day event where CVSA-certified inspectors perform compliance checks, enforcement actions, and educational initiatives focused on all aspects of motor carrier, vehicle, and driver safety.

It is the world’s largest targeted enforcement program for commercial motor vehicles, with almost 15 trucks and motorcoaches inspected every minute across North America during the 72-hour window.

Since its launch in 1988, more than 1.8 million roadside inspections have been conducted during International Roadcheck. The event also serves to educate both the industry and the public about the importance of safe commercial motor vehicle operations and roadside inspections.

CVSA sponsors International Roadcheck in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA), Transport Canada, and Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation.

Question of the Week

My driver has gone through a roadside inspection. How long do I have to keep this documentation on file?

Answer: Motor carriers must keep roadside inspection reports for 12 months. Drivers must submit the report within 24 hours, or mail it in if they can’t return to the terminal.

If there are violations, repairs must be made, and the signed inspection form must be sent back to the state within 15 days.

International Roadcheck is the largest commercial vehicle safety inspection event, with about 15 vehicles checked every minute during the three days across North America.

Since 1988, over 1.8 million inspections have happened during International Roadcheck. The event also raises awareness about commercial vehicle safety.

  • Use the “Carrier History” tool to track if your number of inspections is going up or down.
  • Review inspections and violations with your maintenance provider to fix repeat issues.
  • Keep inspection reports and any repair orders with your vehicle files.
  • Use inspection details (dates, times, and locations) to cross-check driver hours of service for possible log falsification.
  • Train drivers on how to pass inspections and act professionally during the process.
  • Keep vehicles clean and well-maintained to reduce the chance of inspections.
  • Remind drivers that moving violations can lead to inspections.
  • Consider rewarding drivers who pass inspections successfully.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Motorist awareness is an important component of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) comprehensive motorcycle safety program. More than two-thirds of fatal motorcycle crashes involve a motorcycle and another vehicle.

In many of these crashes, the motorist either does not see the oncoming
