Every day, life relies heavily on the crucial work of truck drivers who deliver the goods and resources we all need.

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is a vital occasion for America to recognize and thank the professional truck drivers for their dedication and hard work in one of the most demanding yet essential professions in our economy. With approximately 3.5 million drivers on the road, they ensure our goods are delivered safely, securely, and punctually, while also contributing to the safety of our highways.

This year's National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is set for September 14–20, 2025. In recent years, particularly during the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, Americans and Canadians have demonstrated a remarkable appreciation for the essential role that truck drivers play in their lives. From kids distributing lunches to "I Heart Truck" signs displayed along roadsides, the public has recognized the significant contributions of truck drivers. It's hard to imagine where we would be today without them delivering critical items, such as personal protective equipment (PPE), food, and medical supplies.

Taking a week in September to honor the 3.5 million professional truck drivers is a meaningful way to express gratitude for their commitment to not only delivering our goods safely and on time, but also enhancing highway safety. Now is the time to plan something special to honor these drivers during this dedicated week of recognition.

Driver Recognition Awards

Driver Appreciation Week is an excellent opportunity to assess your recognition and award programs for drivers. It's crucial to acknowledge those who have demonstrated safe and compliant driving practices.

The most effective recognition awards are designed to celebrate safe driving and should be personalized, ensuring they can't be easily obtained elsewhere. Non-monetary awards tend to leave a lasting impression and convey greater value, as they are awarded for achieving specific safety milestones.

The impact of these awards can be amplified by presenting them in front of peers during meetings, banquets, or similar events.

As a motor carrier, you might also want to enroll your drivers in award programs offered by state or national associations. For details on available programs, reach out to your state trucking association, and consider national options provided by organizations like:

  • The American Trucking Associations (www.truckline.com)
  • The National Private Truck Council (NPTC) (www.nptc.org), which offers awards such as the Driver Hall of Fame and National Driver All-Stars

Driver Incentive Awards

Monetary incentive awards are most effective in motivating drivers to meet specific goals, such as achieving a target fuel mileage or passing a clean roadside inspection. These programs can be highly effective in encouraging strong, consistent performance.

CVSA Brake Safety Week Scheduled for August 24–30

This year, Brake Safety Week is set to take place from August 24 to 30, as announced by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). This annual enforcement initiative is part of the larger Brake Safety Awareness Month, observed throughout August.

During Brake Safety Week, roadside inspectors will:

  • Concentrate on brake systems and components during North American Standard Inspections
  • Place a specific focus this year on brake drums and rotors

CVSA will provide a report detailing its findings later in the year. This event also serves as a valuable chance for motor carriers to educate their drivers and maintenance personnel about the critical importance of brake system safety.
