As a professional driver, you're often in the sun, making it crucial to wear the right sunglasses for eye protection. Beyond safeguarding your eyes, the appropriate sunglasses can also improve your visibility, contributing to safer driving.

Tips for Choosing the Right Sunglasses

Sunglasses serve a purpose beyond being a mere fashion statement; they play a vital role in safeguarding your eyes from the sun's damaging rays. It's essential to know the types of light that require protection and those that are less of a concern. Here are some helpful tips for choosing the right non-prescription sunglasses:

  • Select sunglasses that provide 99 to 100 percent protection against ultraviolet (UV) rays, as this is the most crucial factor to consider. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to eye conditions, such as cataracts. Labels indicating "UV absorption up to 400nm" offer the same level of protection as 100% UV coverage. Although some sunglasses may advertise blocking infrared rays, studies have not established a clear link between infrared rays and eye health issues.
  • Don't equate high price with high quality. If you're on a budget, numerous inexpensive sunglasses provide 99 to 100 percent UV protection. You can find great protection without breaking the bank.
  • Evaluate the optical quality of the lenses. In addition to UV protection, lens clarity is essential. To assess this, find an object with a rectangular pattern, such as floor tiles, and hold the sunglasses at a comfortable distance while covering one eye. Slowly move the glasses from side to side and up and down. If the lines stay straight, the lenses are likely good. However, if the lines seem to wiggle, particularly near the center, consider trying a different pair.
  • When selecting sunglasses, prioritize impact-resistant lenses. In the U.S., all sunglasses must comply with impact resistance standards established by the FDA. Although no lens is entirely shatterproof, plastic lenses are generally less prone to breaking. Polycarbonate lenses, often found in sports sunglasses, offer great durability, but they can be more susceptible to scratches. If you decide on polycarbonate lenses, it's advisable to choose ones that come with a scratch-resistant coating.
  • Wearing protective eyewear is essential for high-risk activities. If you're engaging in outdoor sports like water or snow skiing, it's important not to depend on regular sunglasses. Instead, opt for protective eyewear that offers UV protection to shield your eyes from sunburn and reduce glare.
  • The choice of lens color and polarization is based on personal preference. There are no medical reasons to favor one tint over another. While polarized lenses do a better job of reducing glare, they don't provide greater UV protection compared to non-polarized lenses.

After you've chosen the perfect pair of sunglasses, be sure to wear them consistently, especially in summer when UV rays are significantly stronger, often three times as much as in winter. It's also essential to use them while engaging in winter sports, particularly at higher altitudes.

Question of the Week

I Got a Warning Letter from the FMCSA Regarding My CSA SMS Scores… What Should I Do?

A warning letter from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) presents a chance to enhance your safety performance and compliance prior to any further measures being implemented.

Take the time to read the letter thoroughly, as it details your company's specific safety and compliance concerns based on Safety Measurement System (SMS) data. Additionally, it includes guidance on how to access your safety record and describes the possible repercussions if improvements are not pursued.

What Happens Next?

You are not required to respond directly to the letter. However, the FMCSA will continue to oversee your safety performance using its SMS platform: http://ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/sms/.

As a motor carrier, it's important to consistently review your SMS data and implement corrective actions as necessary. If your safety performance does not show improvement, the FMCSA may escalate its interventions, which could involve:

  • Offsite Investigations
  • Onsite Investigations
  • Fines
  • Suspension or Revocation of Operating Authority

Consider this warning an opportunity to proactively address any safety issues before more serious enforcement actions are taken.

CVSA Brake Safety Week Scheduled for August 24-30

This year's Brake Safety Week is scheduled for August 24–30, according to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).

The enforcement initiative is part of the wider Brake Safety Awareness Month, observed throughout August. During the annual enforcement event organized by the CVSA, roadside inspectors will concentrate on brake systems and components as part of the North American Standard Inspections. This year, there will be a particular focus on brake drums and rotors. A report detailing the findings will be released by the CVSA later this year. Additionally, this event provides a valuable opportunity for motor carriers to educate drivers and maintenance staff about the significance of brake safety.
