The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has published new foundational research demonstrating that motor carriers actively involved in state and national membership associations exhibit safer operational practices compared to those who are former members or have never joined.

While it has long been believed, based on anecdotal evidence, that association membership contributes to safety through various resources and services, this research is the first to systematically analyze industry safety data and methodology. The study utilized public safety data from the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) and applied various statistical methods to explore the connection between association membership and safety performance.

The analysis focused on comparing the crash and violation data of trucking fleets categorized as Current, Former, or Never members. Data regarding carrier status was collected from a representative sample of state trucking associations and the American Trucking Associations.

Findings from the Welch's Two-Sample T-Test indicated that current members had significantly fewer crashes and violations than former members, who also performed better than never members. Almost all results were significant at both the 95% and 99% confidence levels. However, due to the infrequency of fatal crashes among carriers, this specific type of data did not yield statistically significant results for either state or national membership.

Dr. Brenda Lantz, Associate Director of the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute, remarked, "All safety stakeholders in the trucking industry are looking for strategies and solutions to improve large-truck safety. This new ATRI research confirms that association membership is another important and proven safety tool for trucking companies."

The ATRI's findings on association safety also offer valuable insights for commercial transportation insurers, enforcement agencies, and academic researchers interested in enhancing safety in the industry.

Security Reminder: Labor Day Weekend

Have you taken steps to secure your terminal facility in preparation for the upcoming Labor Day weekend?

During holidays, it's common for thieves to target truck terminals since many are often left unattended. It's important to implement additional security measures to safeguard trucks and valuable items at your facility.

If your vehicles lack anti-siphon devices or locking caps, ensure that drivers are instructed not to fill the tanks at the end of the day.

  • Verify that all security alarms are functioning properly.
  • Take a walk around the perimeter to ensure that the fencing is intact.
  • Position units and materials (like pallets and tires) well away from the fences to reduce the risk of them being used for climbing.
  • Consider blocking entrances and exits to deter theft of units further.
  • Designate management personnel to conduct random checks at the terminal throughout the three-day weekend.

Prevention and common sense can significantly help prevent theft at your facility.

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week: September 14–20, 2025

Almost every aspect of our daily lives relies on the hard work of truck drivers who ensure that vital goods and resources reach us. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is a significant occasion for the nation to acknowledge and express gratitude to the millions of professional truck drivers devoted to one of the most challenging and essential professions in our economy.

These 3.5 million dedicated individuals deliver goods safely, securely, and punctually while also playing a crucial role in maintaining the safety of our highways. Over the years, both Americans and Canadians have discovered creative ways to show their appreciation for truck drivers, such as children distributing lunches and "I ♥ Trucking" signs along the roads. This recognition highlights the indispensable role that drivers play in our everyday lives.

Looking back over the past three years, we can't overlook the vital role truck drivers played at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, delivering essential items such as personal protective equipment (PPE), food, medical supplies, and more. Their unwavering commitment has been crucial, and it isn't easy to envision our current situation without their efforts.
